Geraldine Hiland

October 27, 1930 — October 22, 2016

Geraldine “Jerri” Hiland, longtime resident of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away October 22, 2016. She is now at home and in the arms of God alongside her loving daughter Donna.  She was born in Greenview, West Virginia to the late Cloey and Ottie Bennett on October 27, 1930.

Upon graduation from Greenview High School, she enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.  After basic training she was assigned to the Weather Squadron at Lowry AFB in Denver, Colorado with an ultimate rank of Sgt.  Jerri was very proud of her service to our country during the Korean War. While exchanging weather reports with the control tower, she met her future husband Dwaine Hiland, a control tower operator.  She and Dwaine married on July 9, 1952.  Following their honorable discharges, she and Dwaine started their family raising five children.  Jerri was a loving and devoted Mother who enjoyed spending time with her close friends and family.  She was a hard worker and was very proud of her West Virginia roots - she always described herself as "rough and tough".   After the children left home, she worked at Montgomery Ward while helping to manage and care for family owned rental property.  Jerri cherished the spring time and loved working in her beautiful garden.  She enjoyed traveling throughout the US and Canada.  She and Dwaine followed the pioneer trails traveling west from Kansas City all the way to the Pacific Ocean, including the Lewis and Clark and Santa Fe trails.  The 400 mile Natchez Trace in Mississippi was another favorite.

She is preceded in death by daughter Donna (Mike) Bray, brothers Clyde Bennett, Mary Watts, Emmett Bennett, Phillip Bennett, and Quentin Bennett.

She is survived by her husband Dwaine, son Gary (Angi) Hiland, daughters Linda (Andy) Williams, Susan Hiland and Peggy Hiland, sisters Adina Mitchell and Ann Ixos, and brothers Emmerson Bennett, and Glen Bennett.  She also leaves many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved and adored.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 26, 2016 from 11:30 AM to 1 PM. Funeral service will be at 1 PM at Terrace Park Funeral Home, 801 NW 108th St. (169 Hwy & Shoal Creek) Kansas City, MO.
