A proud graduate of McKinley Senior High School in Baton Rouge, A.J. played on the football team and graduated in 1983. His journey continued as he joined the United States Air Force, where he honorably served during Desert Storm. After earning a degree from DeVry University, A.J. embarked on a career as a Wyandotte County Deputy Sheriff before finding his place at the United States Postal Service, where he worked until retirement.

A.J.’s passion for football was unmatched. A devoted college football fan, he loved attending LSU games whenever he could. His loyalty to the New Orleans Saints was unwavering, and some of his fondest memories were those spent with friends and family at Saints games. In (year), A.J. married Ceil Hayes, and together they raised two children, while he also welcomed two stepchildren, Cecil Cotton Jr. and Chanel Cotton, into his heart. Later in his journey, he married Carla Carter, embracing two more stepsons, Laman Carter III and Eric Carter.

He will be fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and his aunts, Gloria Robichaux and Brenda Bridgewater.

A devoted member of Sheffield Family Life Center in Missouri, A.J. found great joy in worship and fellowship. His competitive spirit was legendary—especially when it came to dominoes. Whether at work, family gatherings, or with his retirement buddies, A.J. never missed a chance to play. His cooking skills were equally renowned. Known for his famous gumbo and pecan candy, he earned the affectionate nickname “Food Pusher” for his habit of insisting everyone try his delicious creations—whether they were hungry or not.

A.J. will be remembered for his storytelling prowess, often beginning with, “When I was in the military…” Each story carried a lesson, a laugh, or a bit of wisdom—always delivered with his trademark warmth and wit. Generous to a fault, A.J. was the first to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
