Donald Allen Woodmansee's Obituary

Donald Allen Woodmansee, 84, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026.

Donald was born on November 27, 1941, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Vernon and Marie Woodmansee. Entering the world prematurely and weighing only four pounds, Don demonstrated a strength and resilience that would define his life. He grew up alongside his sister, who was fourteen years his senior. During his early years, his family spent a brief time in southeast Missouri before settling in Wichita, Kansas, where Don attended Derby High School.

Following his graduation, Don proudly enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He was stationed in Germany, where he combined his service with his love of music by playing the tuba in the Army band.

After returning home, Don made Kansas City his permanent residence. He began a long and dedicated career with the Social Security Administration, working as a claims authorizer from 1969 until his retirement in 2002.

Don met the love of his life, Kathleen Gribbin, at Grace International Church. They were united in marriage on October 8, 1978.

Music remained a constant joy in Don’s life. He sang in the church choir and found great pleasure in listening to music, especially The Beatles and classical compositions. His knowledge of opera was remarkable—he could vividly recall and recount the stories behind many of the great works. Don was also known for his sharp mind and impressive memory, particularly his ability to remember birthdays. An avid reader, he enjoyed a wide variety of literature and was always eager to learn.

Don also had a love for travel, with a special fondness for Colorado.

Don is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Venita Kruse. He will be fondly remembered by his wife, Kathleen; nieces, Barbara Kruse and Karen McKay; and many extended family and friends.

A Graveside service will be held at Terrace Park Cemetery on Wednesday, April 15th at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made Kansas City Public Television (KCPT).
