Obituary

Ernest Leon Overstreet, 80, of Kansas City, Missouri, went home to be with the Lord on March 9, 2026. He was born November 20, 1945, in Kansas City, Kansas, the eldest child of Raymond Overstreet Sr. and Avis Leone Byers.

Ernie graduated from Park Hill High School in 1963 and later earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Missouri. He went on to spend 32 years as an engineer at Burns & McDonnell, where he was respected for his dedication, hard work, and thoughtful approach to everything he did.
While he built a successful career, what truly defined Ernie was his deep love for the simple and meaningful things in life—his faith, his family, and the beauty of God’s creation.

He loved the outdoors and felt most at home surrounded by nature, often capturing its beauty through his photography. Whether exploring outside, cooking up one of his creative recipes, or sharing stories, Ernie had a way of making everyday moments special.

A man of strong and steady faith, Ernie loved the Lord and faithfully served his church. He shared his gift of music as a member of the church choir and devoted his time to helping others through the church’s food pantry as director. Beyond his church, Ernie also served others through Mission Sunrise and cared for his neighborhood by serving on the HOA board. His servant’s heart and gentle kindness touched many lives.

Ernie was also proud to co-author the book From the Prairie to Paradise, leaving behind not only memories but words that will continue to inspire.

Above all else, Ernie cherished his family. He shared 58 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Carolyn Sue Shelton, and was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved spending time with those he held dear.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Overstreet; three daughters, Angela Wilcoxen (Roger), Amy Duncan, and Michelle Williams (Aaron); his grandchildren, Kaley Barnes (Freddie), Courtney Dillard, Cory Baker, Zachary Dillard (Ashleigh), Madison Williams, Grady Williams, Isaia Wilcoxen, and Bel Wilcoxen; and three great-grandchildren, Adalynn Barnes, Bransyn Dillard, and Mayleigh Barnes. He is also survived by his siblings, Marie Reynolds, Sharon Wieczorek, and Raymond Overstreet Jr; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Overstreet Sr. and Avis Leone Byers; his brothers, Steve Overstreet and Kenneth Overstreet; and his grandson, Joshua Dillard.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Victory Hills Church of the Nazarene on Monday, March 16, 2026, with visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by the service.

In honor of Ernie's love for ministry outreach, contributions may be made to the Church at the Gate – Building Fund. The family chose Church at The Gate because its mission reflects Ernie’s lifelong passion for witnessing God’s transformative work in people’s lives. The church and its community held a special place in his heart.

Ernie’s life was a reflection of faith, love, and service. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the people he served, and the beauty he found in God’s creation.
