James Charles Bethke, born on November 5, 1946, and a respected member of his community, passed away on June 19, 2025. He was 78 years old. James is survived by his beloved wife Elaine, with whom he shared a remarkable love story that spanned 40 years. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love.
James’s early career was marked by his impressive tenure as a pitcher for the New York Mets in the mid-1960s, during which he garnered recognition as the youngest pitcher of his time. He later transitioned to a rewarding career with Union Pacific Railroad, working diligently as an engineer. His passion for his work was evident, and he approached every task with dedication and pride.
In addition to his professional achievements, James selflessly devoted a significant portion of his life to serving others. He proudly served as a reserve in the United States Marine Corps, reflecting his deep commitment to his country. His character was generous, as he often gave what he had to anyone in need, embodying compassion at every turn.
James was known for his quiet strength and humility. A devoted husband and father, he instilled the values of integrity and honesty in his children, leading by example through his own actions. He was always present and intentional, ensuring that he nurtured and mentored his family. His dedication to living a good and honest life resonated deeply in his son Jamie, and daughter Stephanie.
Beyond his family and career, James was a Little League Baseball, and Football coach sharing his wisdom and nurturing the next generation, serving as a wonderful mentor. His contributions to the lives of many will be remembered fondly.
Friends, family, and all whose lives he touched are invited to celebrate James’s life. A Memorial Gathering will be held on July 2, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM, immediately followed by a Memorial Service from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Terrace Park Funeral Home & Cemetery, located at 801 NW 108th St, Kansas City, MO 64155.
James Charles Bethke will be dearly missed but will live on in the hearts and memories of those he inspired and loved.
James is preceded in death by his parents Reuben and Hazel Bethke; and his brother, Richard Bethke.
He is survived by his wife Elaine Bethke; his son, James Bethke Jr. (Mindy); daughter, Stephanie Laughlin; sisters, Janet Beerman, JoAn Jacobsen, Joyce Abbuhl; grandchildren, Hazel Bethke, and Alisha Laughlin.
