James E. Shelton, born on April 13, 1932, in the embrace of family and love, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, warmth, and cherished memories.
James dedicated 30 years of his life to the automotive industry, where his hard work and commitment to excellence earned him the respect of colleagues and friends. His career was marked by a steadfast determination and a passion for his craft, reflective of the same dedication he poured into every aspect of his life.
A proud veteran, James served for four years in the Navy during the Korean War. His military service was a point of pride for him, showcasing his unwavering commitment to his country. James carried the values he learned in service into his daily life, illustrating integrity, respect, and responsibility in all he did.
In a beautiful partnership that spanned 65 years, James married his high school sweetheart, Barbara. Their enduring love story was filled with warmth and joy, as they explored the beauty of nature together, particularly fond of the hummingbirds and butterflies that graced their garden. They enjoyed many camping trips and shared countless moments surrounded by their family, nurturing a legacy of love that will live on in their children and grandchildren.
James was a man of many interests. He could often be found cheering on his favorite basketball teams or working meticulously on cars, showcasing his craftsmanship with wood as he built handmade cradles for his children. Known for his love of ice cream, he had an innate ability to sniff out an ice cream shop wherever his adventures took him, bringing delight to family outings.
His generosity extended in so many ways, as he often took on the role of the devoted driver, escorting the ladies in the family to outlet malls while patiently waiting in the car during their shopping excursions.
James will be greatly missed by his family and all who had the honor of knowing him.
James is preceded in death by his parents James Shelton and Mable Bachman; his loving wife Barbara Shelton; and great grandson, Braxton Meyer.
He is survived by his Daughters; Brenda (Terry) Scholdberg, and Bridget Mehrer; granddaughter, Amy Shoffner; grandson, Sam Scholdberg; granddaughters, Samantha Rogers, and Makayla (Zack) Meyer, 7 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great- grandchildren.
Services to honor James’s life will be held at Terrace Park Funeral Home & Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri, on February 11, 2026, with a visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by the funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment with military honors will follow at Terrace Park Cemetery.
