Larry Dean Callaway, 80 years old, a long-time resident of Kansas City North, Clay County, Missouri died on January 6th, 2026. He was born on November 23rd,1945 at Old Research Hospital on Hospital Hill in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the oldest of three children born to Thomas and Beebee Callaway. Larry attended and graduated from Park Hill High School in 1964. He joined the US Navy and served two tours in the Vietnam War.
After his honorable discharge, he used the GI bill to attend night school to obtain an Associate Degree from Penn Valley Community College. Larry worked in health care in the computer field for two companies, Children’s Mercy Hospital (eight years) and Blue Cross Blue Shield of KC for twenty seven years then retired in May of 2004. Larry met his wife through his cousin Beverley in 1970. They dated and were married on July 17, 1971 at First United Methodist Church in North Kansas City, Missouri.
Vera and Larry have three sons, Brian and his wife Amanda and their son Austin from Smithville, MO. Kevin and his wife Kristie and their sons, Cotton and Crew from Eugene, MO. Craig and his wife Nicole and their son Blake from Gladstone, MO.
Other survivors include his two sisters Donna Wathen and her husband Jerry from Tonitown, Arkansas and his other sister, Sue Callaway, from Vista, California. He has many nephews and nieces whom he admired so much.
Larry enjoyed spending time with family and grandsons playing ball with his son’s, fishing and camping. Larry and Vera danced in a square dance group in the early 70’s. Larry was so proud of his service in the Navy and always enjoyed wearing his Navy hat.
Larry will remain in our hearts and we are so proud of the Legacy he left us.
