Norma Jean Lamp, age 88, died on November 4, 2020. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri on February 21, 1932 to Thomas and Winifred Greeley, and lived her entire life there. She graduated from Northeast High School in 1948. She married Paul Lamp in 1953. They were married for 61 years.
Norma worked for many years at the KC Police Credit Union, eventually retiring as Manager and Board President. She was a long-time member of Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church, and was active on countless committees and in many ways, including as Clerk of Session, youth and day camp leader, Sunday School teacher, women’s ministries leader, Prime Timers, and as Commissioner at Presbytery meetings.
Norma was devoted to her family, and was mightily involved in her daughters’ different activities over the years, including serving as PTA President, Girl Scout leader, classroom volunteer, and cheerleader on the bleachers. Her solid work ethic and leadership showed in everything she did. She had quite the wit, and always a tissue in her pocket.
Norma cherished spending time with family and friends, playing many card games of bridge and pitch, gallivanting with the Red Hats, traveling, making ceramics, going out for root beer floats, as well as volunteering in many community organizations. She and Paul cherished their granddaughters, and attended as many of their programs and events as they could. Her granddaughters will always remember game after game played around the kitchen table, her drawers full of crafts and games, her Smith Corona typewriter, having as much Cap’n Crunch for breakfast as they wanted, and that she printed every e-mail she received. Preceding her in death are her beloved husband, parents, and brothers Tom Greeley, Maurice Greeley, and Jerry Greeley. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by two daughters, Sue (Bob) Abernathy and Sandy (Ken) Nelson; four granddaughters, Lauren Cody, Hannah Cody, Amy Nelson, and Mackenzie Nelson; four great grandchildren, Charlotte, Jackson, Victoria, and Quinn; sister, Dorothy (Fred) Schwartz; sisters-in-law Barbara Greeley and Ada Greeley; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services will be private. The family suggests memorial contributions to Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 7600 NW Barry Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64153, or Venmo at @PineRidgeVM. The family would like to thank the staff at Addington Place of Shoal Creek for their services in caring for Norma, especially during the pandemic when family could not visit.
She was a wonderful and loyal daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor, and we were blessed to have had her in our lives. To honor her memory, go make someone chuckle today. See you later, alligator.
