Preston L.
Cain Jr.
Oct 24, 1946 — Oct 11, 2026
Preston L. Cain Jr. passed away on October 24, 1946.
Preston was born in Abilene, Kansas, on October 24, 1946, to Preston (Lavern) Cain Sr. and Edna Charlene Fuller. His family soon moved to Kansas City and settled in Independence, Missouri, in 1955. Preston graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1964, where he enjoyed English and was on staff of the Envoy, the school newspaper. He continued his education at the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC), earning a Bachelor of Arts in English. He then attended UMKC School of Law, earning his law degree in 1970 and passing the Missouri bar that same year. Preston served as a Missouri state assistant prosecutor and a Kansas City assistant prosecutor while establishing private practice in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Preston was also the proprietor of the Zoo bar, a popular KC dive bar known for Little Beers.
Preston enjoyed traveling to many countries, where he explored local history and sampled regional cuisine. He also loved sharing his extensive knowledge of Kansas City history with family and friends while driving his blue 1973 Caprice Classic convertible. A devoted sports fan, he attended Kansas City Royals and Chiefs games for much of his life and watched every game on television.
Preston’s true love was his family. He married Stephanie Wrigley on a beach in Mexico in 1993, and they returned there often over the years. Together they shared many special times with family and friends, making cherished memories in the Colorado mountains and on adventures across Europe. They also spent much of their time at their vacation home in Branson, Missouri, where Preston could take in as many country music shows as he liked.
Preston also loved and supported his daughter, Rhonda. He taught her to keep score at the K and shared with her his love of country and western music and classic films. He was equally proud of his grandchildren, Don and Bailey, and delighted in watching them grow up and start families of their own. He loved visiting his kids and was there as recently as May.
Preston was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Don Cain; his sister, Carol Cain Kelley; his niece, Megan Kelley; and his father-in-law, Jim Wrigley. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie; his daughter, Rhonda Cain Atkinson of John’s Island, South Carolina; his grandchildren, Donald and Kristen Atkinson of St. Augustine, Florida, and Bailey and Jason Noonan of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; his great-grandchildren, Brooks Atkinson, Lillian Noonan, Reese Atkinson, and Evelyn Noonan; his sister-in-law, Kerry Cain; and several nephews, a niece, and their families.
The family wished to thank the caregivers at North Kansas City Hospital and at North Kansas City Hospice House. In lieu of flowers, donations to ISD Foundation ( include in the check memo - Carol Kelley Education Assistance Grant), The Independence School District Foundation, 201 N Forest Ave, Independence, MO 64050.
