Obituary

Robert (Bob) Louis Verhulst, Sr., 79, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2026, at Kansas City Hospice House, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born on March 23, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri to the late Aloysius (Pete) and Irma Verhulst. Bob graduated from Northeast High School and enlisted in the US Navy, serving during the Vietnam War.

In 1964, Bob met Patricia (Pat) Waller and knew after a few short dates that she was the one, and he would sing “Going to the Chapel” when it came on the radio. On February 4, 1967, they wed. Bob and Pat, happily nicknamed his “Running Bear”, began their years together and welcomed four children.

Returning from the US Navy, Bob started his career at Kansas City Power and Light on March 5, 1970, until he retired in 2007, as a lead cable splicer. He was a member of the IBEW Local 1464 and KCP&L Quarter Century Club.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 59 years, Patricia; his children, Robert (Anne) Verhulst, Jr., Stefanie (Adam) Kassel, Jennifer (Andy) Munsterman, Jeremy (Tiffany) Verhulst; his grandchildren, Conner, Emma, Grant, Alexis, Austin, Matthew, Noah, Lane, Drew, Alex, Aaron, Waverleigh, and Sawyer; his brother, Aloysius Joseph (Jr) (Remonda); along with many extended family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aloysius (Pete) and Irma Verhulst; his sisters, Mary Bonner, Joan Shatto; and his grandson, Austin James Verhulst.

Bob’s legacy will be best remembered for the love he gave, the work he accomplished, and the many lives he touched. His memory will remain in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

All services will be held at Terrace Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, August 31 from 5:00-7:00pm. Funeral Service and Burial will be on Tuesday, September 1 at 10:00am.
