Ruth Ann Legg: 1928 – 2026
Ruth Ann Legg (Ann) was born on 17 March 1928 in Minneapolis, Kansas to Florence Hubbard/Davis and Ross Thompson. Ann graduated from Minneapolis High School in 1946, then from Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri, with a degree of Associate in Arts in 1948. Whilst attending a social function in Columbia, she learned that a handsome young army veteran named Bill Legg was asking the ladies if anyone in their group liked to dance; their reply was that Ann Thompson does! So, and after a few dances, they became quite fond of one another. Ann’s father and stepmother (Winifred Thompson née Garrison), after learning of Ann’s new beau, apparently wished to test their relationship because they next sent her to attend Mills College in Oakland California to work towards a bachelor degree in arts. However, and unbeknownst to them, Bill – who had been a medical corpsman in World War II treating and helping to rehabilitate many soldiers – had also traveled to Oakland to be employed at a physical rehabilitation facility near Mills College. Needless to say, their relationship continued – even thrived – whilst they were in Oakland and after just a year out West, they tied the knot in 1949 at Ann’s home in Minneapolis. But neither Ann’s nor Bill’s educations were over as Bill next was accepted into medical college in Kansas City whilst Ann finished her schooling, earning a Bachelor of Art degree in psychology at the University of Kansas City (now University of Missouri Kansas City). After graduation Ann worked briefly in a clerical position whilst Bill began his medical practice in Gladstone, Missouri. Then came three children, all of whom have had successful careers in information technology, academia, or medicine. After the children grew up and vacated their home, Ann and Bill enjoyed traveling, church, hunting and woodworking (Bill), and being with grandchildren. After many years of retirement, Ruth Ann Legg left this world on February 2nd, 2026. She will be greatly missed. Ann was predeceased by her parents and stepmother, beloved husband, a brother (Jim Davis) and two sisters (Bonnie Clanton and Harriet Lee Hawkins and their spouses Bernard and Web). Ann is survived by her three children, Tom (Alison) Legg, David (Cindy) Legg, and Elisa Hamby plus six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The service will be held on Saturday, 14 February at 11:00 AM, Hillside Christian Church (900 N.E. Vivion Road, Kansas City MO 64118), with visitation at 10:00. After the service, burial will be at Terrace Park Funeral Home & Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Hillside Christian Church in the memory of Ann Legg.
