Evelyn Houston

April 6, 1941 — June 3, 2021

Evelyn M. Houston, 80, of Liberty, Missouri passed away on June 3, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 6, 1941, to Chris and Rosa Lee (Byrd) Weston in Kansas City, Missouri. Evelyn went on to marry James A. Houston Jr., and from that union she had four amazing children: James, Juan, Steven and Stephanie.

Evelyn was a woman of faith and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Liberty where she would sing in the choir on Sundays. She was a woman who loved caring for others at the Liberty Senior Center where she worked for 24 wonderful years. And, for much of her life, women in the community came to Evelyn to have their hair permed or pressed.

Evelyn’s family was her world and meant everything to her. She loved her children fiercely and would do anything to protect and provide for them. She was very proud of her seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her immediate family, Evelyn was a mother figure to many and she always knew what to say to make you feel better. Whether for her son returning stateside from combat or a granddaughter home for Christmas break, Evelyn had an incredible gift for making you feel safe. Always wise and willing to guide you as a mother would, Evelyn taught us to be kind to others, pray for our enemies, to stand up for what is right — even when it’s hard, and to take things with a grain of salt.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents Chris and Rosa Lee Weston, siblings Henry, Eddie, Jerry, Chris and Ellen Rebecca. She is survived by siblings Rosa Mae and Jessie; her children James A. Houston III (Linda), Juan Houston, Steven Houston (Angie) and Stephanie Houston; and, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Evelyn will be truly missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, a gift can be made in Evelyn's memory to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
