Harold Eiken

April 16, 1932 — September 30, 2020

Harold A. Eiken, 88, of Kansas City, MO passed away on September 30, 2020.

Harold was born on April 16, 1932 in Etterville, MO to Slyvester and Sarah Eiken. He grew up near the Lake of the Ozarks, until his family moved to the Kansas City area when he was 12 years old. He was unable to attend school for much of the time due to health problems, but that never stopped his strong fighting spirit. Harold was a dreamer and would take risks that many would be too afraid to do. He overcame many obstacles and setbacks and through pure grit and determination he became a successful businessman. As a boy, Harold and his mother began a trash disposal service, picking up the local waste with a simple horse drawn carriage, which later evolved into his first company, Eiken Disposal. After selling his waste management business, he ventured into the trucking industry. He owned and operated Eiken Trucking, which is still a family run business. He also owned a café in Cowgill, MO for a short time, and it was written that you could smell his delicious cinnamon rolls as soon as you entered town. When he wasn’t hard at work, Harold loved to dance. It was while he was out dancing that he met his favorite dance partner and wife, Eva Jo, and they were married on March 25, 1961.

Harold was a devout Christian and member of Northland Cathedral Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed spending time on the family farm, where he could be found sporting his finest pair of overalls and hunting deer, but his favorite pastime was being with his family. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; five siblings; and daughter, Laurie Jo.  He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Eva Jo Eiken; children, Harold L. Eiken, Jr. (Dorothy Jean), Jeffrey T. Eiken, and Christy (Michael) Moody; grandchildren: Charlotte, Heather, Jessica, Chad, Alex, Zach, Shelby, Kristina, and Thomas; great grandchildren: Chylenn, Nicole, Matthew, Caleb, Sarai, Mary, Sophia, Anthony, and Barisha; great-great grandchildren, Ciara, Jordan, and one on the way; and sister, Ana Mae Ellstrom.

Funeral services will be held at Northland Cathedral on Thursday, October 8, 2020, with visitation from 10:00am to 11:00am, followed by the funeral at 11:00am, and burial at Terrace Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude’s or Northland Cathedral.
