Helen Elizabeth Sellars, 87, of Kansas City, passed away April 25, 2021.  Visitation will be on Sunday, May 2, from 2-3pm followed by services at 3pm, all at Gashland United Methodist Church, 7715 N. Oak Trafficway, Kansas City, MO 64118.  Burial will take place Monday, May 3 at 9:30am at Terrace Park Cemetery.  Suggestions for memorial contributions are: The Sewing Labs, 526 Campbell St, KCMO 64106, 816-888-3051 (thesewinglabs.community), the American Cancer Society (cancer.org), or the Gashland UMC Memorial Fund.

Helen was born on December 11, 1933 in Bolivar, MO, to John Thomas and Lottie (Ross) Cash.  She met Joseph “George” Sellars in a dance class and they were married on November 9, 1963.  Helen was a natural caregiver.   She had a nurturing soul; babysitting little ones until they were school-aged, working at “Mother’s Day Out” at her church, and caring for many family, friends and neighbors of all ages. Helen was a Campfire Girls Leader when her girls were young, and proudly attended all her children’s and grandchildren’s events as they were growing up.  Family was always the most important thing in her life.

Helen was a longtime member of Gashland United Methodist Church, where she spent many years volunteering behind the scenes.  She enjoyed camping and fishing, but her main passion was quilting.  She was a member of the Northland Quilt Guild where she made many treasured friends.  She also spent many hours with the Day Lilies or “the quilting ladies” as her grandchildren called them.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1986; a grandson, Loren Ryan; and a brother, John Cash.  She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses:  Sandra (Greg) Rackers, Karen (Joe) Behen, and Linda (Matthew) Barksdale; grandchildren:  Benjamin Rackers, Lindsey Ryan, Michael Rackers, Samantha Behen, Katie Rackers, Mikaelee Behen, Megan Barksdale, and Brandon Barksdale; a sister, Dorothy Saunders; a brother, Charles (Mary) Cash; a sister-in-law, Ruth Cash; nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many friends.
