Wayne Hakes

February 7, 1948 — January 8, 2021

Wayne Emerson Hakes Sr., 72, passed away January 8, 2021, at Tiffany Springs Rehab Center.  Visitation will be on January 13, 2021 from 12:00-1:00 PM, with a service to follow from 1:00 PM-2:00 PM.  Burial will follow immediately after the service at Terrace Park Funeral Home, 801 NW 108th Street, Kansas City, Missouri.  Casual dress is requested by the family.   Memorial Contributions are suggested to The Alzheimer’s Association or the USO.

Wayne was born February 7, 1948, in Leavenworth, Kansas to William C. and Betty Jean (Godfrey) Hakes.  He graduated in 1966 from North Kansas City High School, married his high school sweetheart Carol Maxine (Boyd) Hakes and joined the U.S. Navy after high school.  Wayne served in Vietnam while assigned to the USS Constellation and USS Ranger.  Wayne and Carol returned Kansas City after leaving the Navy.  He graduated from Maple Wood Community College with an associate degree in Electronics, started a family having three children and began working as an electrician.  Wayne reentered military service by joining the U.S. Army Reserves as chinook crew chief and retired as a Sergeant First Class in 1998.   He retired from the Kansas City Star in 2004.  Wayne was a baseball and softball Dad and a Boy Scouts Leader.  Wayne was a lifelong camper and loved “caravan” vacations with family and close friends; a tradition that started when he was young and one that he carried into his adult years with his own family.  He enjoyed fishing, bowling, being with friends and traveling.

Wayne was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-four years, Carol Maxine (Boyd) Hakes; his parents William and Betty Hakes; brother William C. Hakes Jr.; a brother-in-law, Larry Baldwin; and a nephew, Jake Wehmeyer.  He is survived by his son, Wayne E. Hakes II (wife, Felicia); son, William A. Hakes (wife, Rachel); daughter, Camberly K. Pike; grandchildren:  Mason Hakes (husband, Dustin), Gabriel Hakes, Eden Hakes, Miranda Hakes, Shelby Hakes, Kadence Pike, Kamry Pike, and Kenna Pike; sister:  Lorna Woods, brother-in-law: Roger Boyd (wife, Dale); sisters-in-law: Judy Stewart (husband, John), Lois Adams (husband, Wayne), and Carma Baldwin and numerous nieces and nephews.
